It is 1964 and Mary Adams is 19, unmarried and seven months pregnant.  Forcibly sent to a church-run mother and baby home, St Saviours, by a mother intent on keeping up appearances, Mary, with only her Dansette record player for company, meets other young women in the same situation, each with their own story to tell as to how they ended up there.  They try to cope, not only with the shame, but also with the dawning realisation that they will have to give up their babies for adoption, whether they like it or not.  Mary, however, has her own ideas about her future, which lead her into conflict with the formidable matron who runs the home.  Bonded by a down-to-earth sense of humour, and their fanatical love of the classic girl-group songs of the period, the girls’ effervescence keeps breaking through as they make the difficult journey from carefree youth to harsh adulthood.
